Copper Garden Planters Through a Vermont Winter

Copper handles cold well. The metal itself is not damaged by freezing temperatures. It expands and contracts with the cold, but the gauge I use for planters is thick enough that this does not cause cracking or splitting. The risk in a Vermont winter is not the copper; it is the soil and water inside the planter.

About

A bit more

The workshop is a converted dairy barn on a back road outside of Montpelier. The forge, the anvils, the shears, and the English wheel all live in what used to be the milking parlour. It is cold in January and warm in July and the acoustics are terrible, which is fine because the hammering is loud anyway. Megan works alone, takes on about 30 to 35 commissions a year, and turns down work that does not fit the schedule rather than rushing a piece. If you want something by a specific date, say so upfront and she will tell you whether it is realistic. Most people appreciate that more than they expect to.

The first few were embarrassing. The fourth one was not.
FAQ

Common questions

Is the price you quote the price I actually pay?

Yes. Quotes from Copper Wave Works are itemised by material weight, hours, finishing method, and shipping. If something changes during the build. A design adjustment you request, for example. Megan will flag it before doing the extra work, not after. There are no surprise line items at invoice time.

How do I pay, and when is the deposit due?

A 50% deposit is due before work begins, with the balance due before shipping or pickup. Copper Wave Works accepts bank transfer and check. Credit card payments can be arranged through a third-party processor but add a 3% fee, which Megan will tell you about upfront.
